CHICO, Calif. - What would you do if you lost wifi or use of the internet?

Well, one group of hobbyists in Chico has a solution. Ham radio!

Saturday and Sunday amateurr radio operators are competing to make contact with hundreds of other radio users across the country in a 24-hour window. Their field day is being held at the Chico Family Masonic Center during the weekend.

Ham radio was used extensively during the Carr Fire when all cell phone communication failed. It was also used during the Camp Fire.

Jim Matthews, a member of the Amateur Radio Club, said, "During the Carr and Camp Fire over 25 local operators helped to coordinate emergency communication."

Matthews said the local operators also helped coordinate animal rescue operations.

Individuals and families are invited to come to the Chico Family Masonic Center on East Avenue in Chico on Saturday night or Sunday to see what the ham radio operators do, and to find out how to participate in emergency radio programs.
