It was a full house at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Gridley Wednesday evening, as the group held its 74th commander's birthday dinner to recognize both past commanders as well as their auxiliary members, VFW members, local police officers, fire crews, sheriff’s officers, and EMTs.
Lynne Spencer is the VFW auxiliary president, and between her and the VFW, they gave out about 30 awards.
There was also the special Americanism award, an award for someone who honors the flag.
“This is somebody in the community, every year, that has flown their flag or that has done something special with the flag,” said VFW Auxiliary President Lynne Spencer.
This year, that award went both the Cade Boeger family and firefighter Jason Romero.
“I don't feel like we deserved anything, but it's a beautiful honor and we're grateful for it,” said Boeger.
The Boegers have always flown a huge flag in front of their house. Cade says respect for the country and the desire to honor the flag is something that's always been instilled in him.
The Boegers’ house nearly burned down in the Cherokee Fire last year, but a Cal Fire crew saved their home, and Jason Romero took the time to bring down the huge flag and fold it neatly on the couch.
“I just found my moment and saw it and took it and was able to get it down without getting it dirty and touching the ground,” said Romero.
Romero says he checks into his job every day just like everyone else does and he is passionate about it, passionate about helping people.
“Totally gratifying being around all these vets and real heroes, people we look up to. Being honored by them is an honor,” he said.
The Boegers’ house did eventually burn down about a week later, but Cade said the rebuilding is going well and it should be done by October.
We at Action News Now also received an award for the continuing coverage of Pearl Harbor Day and keeping that in the spotlight. We want to thank the Gridley Auxiliary VFW for that, and it was an honor being there to receive it.
