Chico, Calif. - According to Linda Herman, Park and Natural Resources Manager with the City of Chico, the goats are back to help reduce fire risk and to help get rid of invasive weeds.

Their grazing area changes each day as they chomp through new vegetation. A guard is on-site 24 hours a day, and there are several guard dogs inside the pen. Up to 800 goats, including several nursing kids, are there.

The first area to be grazed will be near the Chico Equestrian Center, which is the area bound by Manzanita Ave., Wildwood Ave., at the entrance to Upper Park, Lindo Channel, and the road into the equestrian center.

Herman said the goats belong to Capra Environmental Services Corp. "Goat grazing has proven to be a very effective vegetation management tool as goats will eat star thistle, poison oak, and many other non-native plants," Herman said. "They will also elevate the vegetation, which helps reduce the risk of ladder fuels."

The company uses electric fencing, so the city is asking that people watch their children and their pets around the fence. They are also asking people not to harass or feed the animals.

The animals will stay mostly in the Upper Park area for the time being but if funding allows, they will be moved back down to Lower Park.
