CHICO, Calif - Hundreds made their way on Sunday to the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD) for the fifth annual “Chico Reads Across America” event.

Families were treated to free lunch, a variety of games and activities and every child left with a free book.

The event was organized and paid for by a local teachers union as a gift to the community.

Rachel Frank is the president of the Butte County Teachers Association and said it’s all about celebrating a passion for reading.

"We love bringing families together, we love interacting with children and families in the community and we love literacy and we love books and we love the opportunity to bring folks together and celebrate those things,” Frank said.

If you missed the event, you can also attend next year's event.

It is always held on the last Sunday in February at the CARD Center.

Tuesday was another beautiful day for northern California as a cold front began to bear down on the West Coast. We can expect increasing clouds late tonight, stronger breezes, and a chance for mountain rain and snow showers.
