ORLAND, Calif. - A former student has created a scholarship in honor of her former teacher who passed away last year.

"She really had a way of promoting confidence," said Hannah Peeler, a former student.

"Just a smile that filled up the room. a loud personality you couldn't miss," said Andrew Long, another former student.

Jenise Coon was a teacher in Orland for CK Price Middle School and Chico High School.

For at least 2 decades you could catch her conducting a choir class or performing herself.

"I feel like she always had a smile on her face," Peeler explained, "she was always someone who saw the good in people."

Peeler had Ms. Coon for three years in the CK Price Middle School band.

She has set up a scholarship for students in Orland to honor the late music teacher.

"It'll begin being awarded in 2022," Peeler explained, "the goal of it is just to continue some of that light and kindness that Jenise fully embodied."

"I played the tuba," Long said.

Andrew Long remembers Ms. Coon's dedication.

"Whenever I was auditioning for honor band. She told me 'hey you're going to have to stay after school' and I was an athlete. She would stay after school and practice with me."

A selfless teacher's message still resonating with her students, remembering her on a high note.

What's one message Ms. Coon told you that you will always take in life? Action News Now asked the former students.

"See the good in everyone," Peeler said.

"Have passion in whatever you're doing. It was obvious whenever she showed up to work she wasn't working," Long said.

Ms. Coon first taught at CK Price Middle School before moving to Chico High School.
