Highway 99 spot fire caused by bird, power line

CAL FIRE has determined that the Nelson Fire was caused by a large bird flying into a power line in the area of Highway 99, near Richvale.

UPDATE 12:16 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2019 - CAL FIRE has determined that the Nelson Fire was caused by a large bird flying into a power line in the area of Highway 99, near Richvale.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - CAL FIRE crews are at the scene of a spot fire off of Highway 99, near Richvale.

CAL FIRE first reported the fire just after 10:30 a.m. on the side of Highway 99, north of Nelson Road. 

Fire officials said the fire is a 100 by 50-foot spot fire.

There are also reports of a downed power line. PG&E is at the scene working to de-energize the downed power line. 

CAL FIRE said the area the spot fire is burning is near wet rice fields. The water and greenery are helping with containment efforts.
