CHICO, Calif. - Tennants and firefighters kept a fire from destroying the Avaneda Apartments in Chico, located off of the Esplanade.

Firefighters were called to the complex in north Chico just after 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Flames were contained to one unit, and one witness said he attempted to help put out the flames in a woman's unit.

"I tried to put the fire out but the smoke was too bad," said Albert Chavez, a tenant at the apartment complex. "I came out and we waited a little bit and we waited for the fire department, and then I saw the smoke was a little lower so I went in and I was able to put the fire out. Then I came back out and then the fire department came and everything went crazy."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
