February 24th Weathercast

A very rainy week ahead!

Posted: Feb 24, 2019 9:49 PM

We have had a few days of mostly dry weather but all that is about to change in a big way! Rain will spread from north to south on Sunday night and all of next week looks quite wet.

Our next storm is already making landfall along the coast. Rain will spill into the valley on Sunday night and spread south Monday morning. Redding will see rain several hours earlier than the Chico area.

Finally, a full-blown Atmospheric River or stream of precipitation pushes inland Monday through Thursday, bringing heavy rain to the valley and a lot of snow to the mountains. Snow levels will rise out of this storm, starting near 4000' late Sunday... rising to near 5000' by Monday, and 6000' by Tuesday/Wednesday! A Winter Storm Warning has been posted.

Precipitation amounts will be very impressive. Anywhere from 2-5 inches of rain is expected in the valley with some areas possibly even getting more. Also, it will be raining on top of snow in the lower elevations of the mountains so a Flash Flood Watch has been posted. In the higher elevations snowfall will be anywhere from 2-5 feet or even more in snow prone locations such as Lassen Peak which could see up to ten feet of new snow once this system has passed through.

All in all it is going to be a very stormy week in Northern California.

July began on a seasonably hot note for northern California with plenty of sunshine, and fortunately very little wind. We'll have a minor cooling trend through Friday before more heat arrives for the holiday weekend.
