SUTTER COUNTY, Calif. - On Sunday, Jan 5 at approximately 1:30 a.m. CHP responded to a single-vehicle collision that caused one fatality.
The accident happened on the northbound highway 99 lanes south of Nicolaus Avenue.
Officials say the vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway 99 at approximately 75 mph in the number 1 lane north of Powerline Road when the 19-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel.
CHP says the vehicle veered across the median and southbound lanes of Highway 99. As the vehicle left the asphalt roadway and onto the gravel shoulder, it overcorrected causing it to roll several times.
Officials say the driver and front passenger were ejected from the vehicle causing fatal injuries to the 22-year-old passenger who was pronounced dead at the scene. A rear passenger received minor injuries.
CHP says drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in this collision.
