OROVILLE, Calif. – An Oroville man has been arrested for the 2017 murder of John Prater.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a homicide in the Oroville area that was reported on Oct. 5, 2017. Prater was 35 years old at the time of death.
For the past three years, Butte County Sheriff’s detectives have continued to investigate Prater’s murder. During that time, detectives identified 54-year-old Larry Bonner, of Oroville, as a suspect. In September of 2019, Bonner was arrested for firearms and narcotics charges, authorities said. He was convicted on those charges and sentenced to seven years in California State Prison.
In July of 2020, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Bonner for one felony count of murder. On Aug. 11, Bonner was transported from San Quentin State Prison to the Butte County Jail, according to detectives. The
