REDDING, Calif. - People looking to buy guns are seeing a backlog in their background checks, which is another impact of coronavirus.

Before the pandemic, the Department of Justice would normally complete background checks within the 10-day waiting period. The DOJ says people should expect background checks to take longer. But the delays are leaving some frustrated.

“So many people are buying guns lately, it's a little backed up,” said Eric Mathison of Redding.

“I had to wait 12 to 13 days for it to finally get approved, which was a little bit of process and a little bit frustrating.”

Olde West Gun and Loan in Redding tells Action News Now, it's seeing more first-time gun buyers coming into their store during this time

If a person's background check passes, they have 20 days to pick up their gun. The Department of Justice says it has up to 30 days to complete background checks.
