CHICO, Calif. - A 16-year-old arrested last week was formally charged with murder and assault with a firearm on Monday in connection to the deadly shooting at Teichert Ponds, according to District Attorney Mike Ramsey.
Witnesses said there was a group of four teens who walked past the encampment, Ramsey said. After walking past the encampment multiple shots were fired.
Ramsey said the three other teens were contacted and interviewed but they are not facing any charges at this time. He added that they are considered witnesses.
The 16-year-old will appear in juvenile court for arraignment on Tuesday. Ramsey's said his office would request the juvenile be tried as an adult due to the violence displayed.
Guy Steven Vanzant, 53, was determined to be dead at the scene on Sept. 4 at about 2:30 a.m.
A second man was shot and is still in the hospital recovering from the injuries he sustained but Ramsey is not sure what his status is.
