SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - The Shasta County District Attorney's Office is addressing reports they have received of threatening phone calls.
A scammer calls claiming to be from the County Clerk's Office and is asking about debts, DA office said. The scammer then tries to convince people to send them money and/or provide personal identifying information. However, the scammer may already have specific information about your correct name, address, and part of your Social Security number. The information is used to give off the impression of legitimacy.
The DA office wants to remind people to look up the real number for a government agency to make sure what the caller is saying is true.
"Be suspicious of anyone, no matter who they say they are, who asks you to provide your SSN, wire money, or load a rechargeable money card as a way to pay back the debt. There's no legitimate reason for someone to ask you to send money in that way," Shasta County District Attorney's Office said via Facebook.
