CHICO, Calif. - Crews have broken ground on the "Bikeway 99" bike path, planned to run along Highway 99 through Chico.
The City of Chico said this bikeway will provide a "critical gap" closure along the east side of the Highway.
From Business Lane on East 20th Street to the Skyway, the path is set to be finished in September of this year.
“We are excited to see the 4th Phase of this major bikeway corridor that has been planned and envisioned by our community for over a decade,” said Brendan Ottoboni, City of Chico Public Works Director of Engineering. “This section makes a critical connection from our large commercial areas along Business Lane, south to Skyway. This provides safe and effective nonvehicular transportation for all users.”
This bikeway will provide a connection north to the 20th Street Chico Mall commercial area, east to Wittmeier Drive and south to the Butte College Chico Center and the Skyway.
This is only one part of the larger Bikeway 99 plan which will eventually span approximately seven miles.
If you are traveling along the Highway, you should expect minimal traffic impacts as the majority of work will be taking place outside of the public roadway.
