MCCLOUD, Calif. - The Shasta-Trinity National Forest will be conducting controlled burns in Shasta and Trinity counties from Oct. 18-22, north and east of McCloud.

The goal of the projects is to reduce the severity of wildfires through low-intensity burns of vegetation on the forest floor. This will provide added protection for communities in the wildland-urban interface.

The Forest Service also hopes that the burns will promote a more resilient forest life and be good for surrounding animal habitats.

The following are the areas of the controlled burns:

  • Harris Unit, which is 597 acres and borders the Pilgrim Creek road on the west side and the Harris Spring road on the north side in T42N R2E Southwest ¼ of section 31. Crews will utilize both hand and aerial ignition techniques.

  • Davis Project, which is 45 acres and located in the Harris Mountain area on the south side of the Harris Mountain road (42N32) T41N R2E section 4. Crews will be utilizing hand ignition techniques only.

  • Algoma Unit, which is 407 acres and located east of McCloud off Highway 89 and Cattle Camp road (40N44). Crews will be utilizing hand ignition techniques only.
