GRIDLEY, Calif. - The water system used by Manzanita Elementary School in Gridley tested positive for elevated levels of a man-made agricultural chemical, which is also a carcinogen according to an email sent on Friday by the Butte County Public Health.

According to the email, 1, 2, 3 - Trichloropropane, which is used as a pesticide and herbicide additive and a known carcinogen under Prop 65, was found in a small public water system.

Once the school learned about the contamination they immediately gave their students safe drinking water and were protected from further exposure.

The school is working with Butte County Environmental Health as well as the State Water Resource Control Board to plan when to install a new deep well or to install a treatment system that will remove the chemical from the drinking water.

Water treatment for TCP is typically achieved through a filtration system using granular activated carbon, which absorbs the chemical, filtering it out of the water, said Butte County Public Health.

The email did not disclose when they discovered the contaminated water.

Rain showers and a good chance for thunderstorms are on the way for your Friday night and Saturday forecast. We'll also be much cooler and have gusty South winds this weekend. Some showers are possible early next week, but dry and warmer weather returns for the middle of next week.
