CHICO, Calif. - On Wednesday, Rep. Doug LaMalfa was one of 14 Republicans to vote against a bill that would establish June 19th as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The bill passed by the house on Wednesday was signed by President Joe Biden on Thursday.

We reached out to LaMalfa for an interview.

He sent us the following statement:

“Juneteenth is an important point in our history, commemorating the end of a dark period and fulfilling the goal of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the hundreds of thousands that were killed in the Civil War to enforce it. The title of the bill and holiday as the 'Juneteenth National Independence Day' could lead to further racial division as it now appears we have two different Independence Days, rather than celebrating a more appropriately named Emancipation Freedom Day. This legislation to create another paid federal day off misses the mark, and costs American taxpayers an estimated $600 million. I’ve enthusiastically supported resolutions commemorating Juneteenth and have happily participated in community events of its celebration.”

Get out and enjoy this beautiful weather tonight! If you do head out and plan to stay out late, probably bring an extra later to throw on for when the sun sets as temperatures will be cooling off into the low to mid 60s for the valley by midnight and low to mid 40s by tomorrow morning.
