City of Chico announces appointment of interim Police Chief

Chico Police Chief Michael O'Brien retires Friday.

CHICO, Calif. - Chico City Manager, Mark Orme announced Deputy Chief Matt Madden as the interim Police Chief on Wednesday morning.

Madden has been with the Chico Police Department for 23 years. Outgoing Chief Mike O'Brien is retiring on June 5. Chico City Manager, Mark Orme, said the recruitment process for a permanent chief will resume when coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

In January, Chico Police Chief Mike O'Brien announced he would be retiring from his position by early June. He said this was not an easy choice to make, and that he is taking his family into consideration for this decision.
