CHICO, Calif. - The idea to host a drive-in movie theatre in Chico's Meriam Park could soon become a reality.

For months now, families have been stuck at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. Dan Gonzales, the owner of Meriam Park, is working to change that.

Since movie theatres are shut down due to COVID-19 concerns, Gonzales plans to open up an outdoor movie area for people to come out and enjoy.

"The whole idea is how to get people out of their houses and in a community setting and safely doing so," said Gonzales. "The theatre will be places where people can gather in their cars and see some entertainment, and some concession stands for people to eat, a beer cart and nachos beers and burgers things like that."

He also wants to eventually use the space for drive-in concerts, too. Ultimately, the goal is to provide a fun and safe place for people in the community to visit.

Gonzales says they are hoping to host drive-in movies three nights a week - on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The launch date for the venue is planned for Sept. 17 with a price of $25 per car.

Prime Cinemas in Red Bluff is launching a drive-in movie experience beginning Sept. 5. The Downtown Oroville Drive-In Movie Night is also hosting a screening on Friday, Sept. 4 at 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday was another sunny and unseasonably warm to hot day for much of northern California. It was much like Monday, except the wind was stronger, and the wind will be much stronger through much of the next week.
