CHICO, Calif. - Students, parents and teachers from Sierra View Elementary School started their Halloween with a pumpkin smash using a medieval catapult to launch pumpkins out into their field, all to promote healthy eating.
Children came dressed up for the festive holiday and began arriving at 8:30 a.m. to participate in a parade around the playground.
Once that was done, faculty lined them up along their field to experience a fun pumpkin smash.
A trebuchet, which is a tool used during the medieval times, was used to launch decorative pumpkins, colored by students from each class.
One student was picked from each class to help pull the lever and launch it.
The school has a prominent garden that produces lots of fruits and vegetables, and faculty wanted a way to raise awareness of healthy eating with Wednesday's pumpkin launch.
The launch was not a competition, and teachers hope this will be an annual event.
