CHICO, Calif. - Saturday night was the last night that the Safe Space winter shelter in Chico will be open for the season.

Due to lack of available church space they decided to close three weeks earlier than they normally would.

Safe Space provides shelter and a hot meal for Chico homeless during the coldest winter months.

They rotate through multiple churches in Chico and they say they simply ran out of space this year.

Operations Manager Rick Narad said, "Usually we have churches who participate each year, but several were doing things related to the Camp Fire and they weren't available to us."

Safe Space hopes to have a permanent location in the future so they can run all year long.

The closing of the shelter means 60 to 65 homeless will be released into the streets.
