BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – A Chico woman who falsely claimed she was a Camp Fire victim is facing jail time, after blaming a series of criminal acts on Camp Fire trauma.
A woman convicted of grand theft attempted to get a lesser sentence by falsely claiming to be a Camp Fire survivor.
A jury convicted 45-year-old Traci Renae Wright in May 2018, for a December 2017 crime of stealing clothing, medicine, jewelry, luggage checkbooks, and boots.
A judge of May 10, 2018, placed Wright on probation. Quickly after, she was found in violation of that probation when she failed to serve the time imposed by the judge.
During her sentencing Thursday, she told the judge, losing her home in the Camp Fire was the tipping point that drove her to commit those crimes.
The prosecutor pointed out that the Camp Fire happened in 2018, nearly a year after the crimes.
Prosecutors said when this was pointed out Wright turned angry, cursing those in the court and “flipping off” the prosecutor.
Wright now faces three years in the Butte County Jail.
