CHICO, Calif. – Early Saturday morning two people were shot on the north side of Teichert Ponds, Chico Police Department said.
Officers said they got multiple 911 calls about a shooting at 2:28 a.m. in the Teichert Ponds area at the south end of Chico.
They described finding two gunshot victims on the north side of the pond.
One of the victims who was shot in the abdomen died at the scene, police said.
The other was taken to Enloe Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound to the lower extremity. Police said on Saturday morning that the victim is in stable condition.
Witnesses at the ponds said four teenagers, about 14 or 15 years old, came into the area, pointed lasers at those in the encampment and two pulled out their guns.
Witnesses have the same reactions: sadness and fear.
“I was at the far end of the ponds when it sounded like some teenage kids just coming in to have fun," Mary Childers, one of the witnesses, said. "They came in being loud. I didn’t think anything of it. It’s normal. Kids have fun and it’s okay. Five minutes go by after they passed where I was sitting at the other end of the ponds, and you hear gunshots. Just repeating, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. Don’t treat people inhumane like they did last night. It’s not fair and it’s not right.”
The Chico Police Department says it took officers about three minutes to arrive at the area.
The police are not releasing the names of the victims. They are asking for assistance from the community in their investigation. If anyone has information about the shooting you are asked to call the Violence Suppression Unit of the Chico Police Department at (530) 897-4910.
