UPDATE 4:46 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 - A mock-water tower has been approved in Chico, for the use as a cell phone tower. The project was approved unanimously by the Chico Planning Commission on Thursday evening.
It will replace an existing Cal Water tower which is slated to be torn down at Oleander and East Sixth Ave.
Building and demolition permits still have to be issued before work begins, but that's an administrative process. Since the real tower is not historic, no hearings are required.
CHICO, Calif. - Chico's Planning Commission is being asked to approve a cell phone tower that will resemble a water tower.
It would replace the existing Cal Water Tower, slated to be torn down at Oleander and East Sixth Ave. That tower already holds wireless equipment.
Staff is recommending the mock-water tower to be approved, saying that Verizon Wireless adapted its proposal to address neighbors' concerns.
Cal Water is preserving two more historic towers on East Third Street.
A decision is expected at Thursday night's meeting. View the full staff report on the project below.
