BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years and four months for one count of felony cruelty to an animal, the Butte County District Attorney said.

23-year-old Brandon Chin of Chico plead no contest to one count of felony cruelty last month and received his sentencing Wednesday.

Prior convictions of domestic violence, kidnapping and sex with a minor were included in his sentencing, the attorney's office said.

The cruelty charges were from an incident on Feb. 23 when Chin’s girlfriend reported seeing him through her doorbell camera carrying her limp 1-year-old dog, according to District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

She reported Chin carried the dog to the back patio and rinsed the dog with water, Ramsey said.

Ramsey said a witness then said they saw several injuries to the head and Chin admitted to kicking the dog in the face.

A veterinarian attempted to save the dog’s life but was unable to.

“A necropsy sound the dog was killed by catastrophic blunt force trauma to the head,” Ramsey said.

Chin is being held in the Butte County Jail until he is transferred to state prison.

August began seasonably hot on this Sunday with fewer showers and thunderstorms than previous days, but a few did still pop over the higher terrain. Our rain chances are disappearing, but the heat and smoke will remain.
