CHICO, Calif. – The Butte County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a Chico man for striking a victim with an axe in Butte Meadows.
Deputies said they contacted a victim at a hospital who had been assaulted with an axe and had a large wound in his chest area. The victim is currently in stable condition.
Detectives were eventually able to identify 37-year-old Matthew Dorenzo as the man who struck the victim with an axe. He was immediately authored an arrest warrant, which was signed by a Butte County Superior Court Judge. It was also noted that Dorenzo was associated with a home in Chico and Oroville.
Around 7:30 a.m. on May 23, detectives said they saw Dorenzo’s vehicle in the area of the Oroville home as they were conducting surveillance. Detectives followed Dorenzo’s vehicle and patrol deputies conducted a traffic stop where he was placed under arrest.
After the traffic stop, detectives located additional witnesses who confirmed Dorenzo was the one who struck the victim with an axe.
Dorenzo was booked into the Butte County Jail. After reviewing the facts in the arrest warrant, a Butte County Superior Court Judge set his status as no bail until Dorenzo attends further court proceedings, according to the sheriff’s office. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, May 27 at 3 p.m.
