Chico man pleads not guilty to murder charges

Chico Police said 23-year-old Kai Liukkonen Perrelli is being held on a $2 million bail for a deadly shooting that took place in the area of 9th Street and Cedar Street.

UPDATE: 9:21 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2020 - A Chico man pled not guilty to charges of murder Thursday, Aug. 6.

Prosecutors say Kai Perrelli shot and killed his neighbor, Scott Thomson on July 26 in Chico. The jail is holding Perrelli on a $2 million bail – awaiting his preliminary hearing Sept. 8.

UPDATE: 4:55 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2020 - Butte County District Attorney, Mike Ramsey said Kai Perrelli was arraigned today on a count of murder and will return to court for further arraignment tomorrow.

Perrelli's bail was set at $2.1 million, according to Ramsey. He is charged with an open count of murder an enhancement of using a firearm. 

Ramsey added that the victim and Perrelli did not know each other very well, but did live in the same neighborhood.

UPDATE: 3:51 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2020 - Police say a Chico man is being held on a $1 million bail for a deadly shooting that took place Sunday afternoon in the area of 9th Street and Cedar Street.

The victim in this investigation has been identified as 28-year-old Scott Thomson, of Chico, according to police.

The Chico Police Detective Bureau responded to the scene and conducted a homicide investigation. After they interviewed witnesses, processed the crime scene, and served a search warrant, it was determined that 23-year-old Kai Liukkonen Perrelli was the suspect in the case, according to police.

This is still an active investigation. The Chico Police Detective Bureau is asking anyone who may have information or witnessed the incident to call 530-897-4911.

Perrelli was booked on a count of Murder and transported to the Butte County Jail on Sunday, according to the Chico Police report.

UPDATE 5:05 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2020 - The Chico Police Department received calls about shots in the area of 9th Street and Cedar Street at 12:30 Sunday afternoon. When they responded they found a man with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

They rushed the man to the hospital, but he did not survive.

Witnesses told police that the shooter ran off, still carrying the gun.

A pursuit ended near Dayton Road and Walnut Street. The suspect was taken into custody.

The victim's name is being withheld until his family is notified.

This is an ongoing investigation. Police want the public to know that they believe this is an isolated incident. They said there should be no public safety concerns.

UPDATED 2:25 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2020 - The Chico Police Department has confirmed that one person was shot. A suspect ran from the scene. A pursuit was conducted and the suspect was detained.

The person who was shot was taken to a local hospital. We do not know his condition.

CHICO, Calif. -  Action News Now reporter Mackenzie Drigo is reporting on a shooting incident that occurred in chico on Sunday early in the afternoon.

We have these pictures of roadblocks in Chico surrounding the incident. These are in the vicinity of Walnut Street. We will add more information as soon as details are verified by the Chico Police Department.

Streets in the area may be blocked for several more hours, said police officials at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Walnut Street is now open, but other roads near the railroad tracks and Cedar Street are closed at this time.
