CHICO, Calif. - The decision by Chico city leaders to approve the temporary closure of Old Humboldt Road has been made.
The goal of this closure is to reduce the amount of illegal dumping, littering and criminal activity along the route, as well as a concern about fire danger.
The road will be closed to cars but open for those walking and bicycling.
For 18 months, the closure will be in place. By the end, the city will then have to renew it if they feel it needs to go longer.
'Respect The Walls' has been working to clean the area and maintain the historic rock walls and wagon ruts, both of which date back to the Gold Rush era.
"We came around to being happy about it because we realized it's the only way to actually stop the activity that's going on up here," said Debbie Meline of 'Respect The Walls'.
Ultimately, the group plans to work towards establishing a heritage park along the road.
