CHICO, Calif. - Firefighters got a quick handle of a grass fire that burned dangerously close to some Chico homes early Friday morning near the Meriam Park area.
Firefighters received a call around 6:30 a.m. Friday about a fire in an empty grass field on East 20th Street near Concord Avenue.
Crews quickly responded and discovered a fire about a quarter of an acre in size, burning behind some homes. Fire Captain Dave Main tells Action News Now it could have threatened homes had the response not been as quick is it was.
Within 30 minutes, firefighters knocked down the fire and had it contained. Main tells Action News Now the fire could not have started by natural causes so they are trying to figure out if it was human-caused.
The 911 caller did tell firefighters that they saw someone with a shovel around the time when the fire broke out.
Firefighters are looking for someone for questioning in regards to this fire.
Main tells Action News Now there are a lot of transient camps in the area where the fire was.
One lane of East 20th street was blocked off for nearly an hour while firefighters put out the fire.
The cause is still being investigated.
