CHICO, Calif.- Cities across the state have adopted shelter-in-place orders as coronavirus cases are on the rise in the United States.

City leaders say, that could potentially be a reality for Chico.  Action News Now spoke with Chico city manager, Mark Orme, who says the city is constantly communicating with Butte County Public Health officer, Andy Miller.

Orme says, it would be up to Miller to decide if the city should move forward with a shelter-in-place order.

Action News Now reached out to Mayor Randall Stone, who says, if that were to happen, the city would still need assistance with its operations.

In a phone interview, Mayor Stone told Action News Now, he believes a shelter-in-place order could soon be adopted in Chico, "I cannot give you a timeline because we are depending on metrics that we don't have and if we had them we would already be making a declaration, yeah we are very close from considering a declaration, I don't think there's a debate of whether or not this will occur, I don't think that exists anymore, it's a question of 'when'," Stone said.

Mark Orme says he has been working with city attorney's office to develop an emergency declaration resolution, and are looking at all of the different options to help keep the community safe.

"I know that the elected officials in the city are diligently looking at the options available, as it relates to being very close, that's all a matter of perception as to when, and right now because those contemplations are taking place, people are trying to ensure that the public aware that those  contemplations are being discussed, and so that's a value for the public to know but there's no timeline in place right now as to when or when not that might occur", Orme said.

He may request a council meeting by the end of the week to discuss this issue.

Mayor Stone says they are still not sure if a shelter-in-place order will be included in the emergency declaration.

A press conference will take place at Butte County Public Health, on Thursday at 11 a.m. in Oroville.
