NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - Two North State cities are set to host their annual Christmas tree lighting events Friday evening. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic - they will be virtual this year.

The Downtown Chico Business Association will host its annual Christmas tree lighting event on its Facebook page. The event will start at 6 p.m.

The celebration of light in the Chico City Plaza will include a short program of music & uniting words that will culminate in the arrival of Santa to light the Christmas Tree. Other City leaders will join in the countdown to light the tree in City Plaza - all from the comfort of home this year. This year's tree will be decorated with more than 2,000 LED lights.

The City of Redding is also preparing for its tree lighting.

This year's event is hosted by Viva Downtown. The event kicks off on Facebook at 6:50 p.m., leading up to the tree lighting at 7 p.m. There will be a gift card giveaway to support Downtown businesses and Mayor Erin Resner and her family will be in attendance to help flip the switch. The Christmas tree is a partnership between the city of Redding, Redding Electric Utility, and some local companies.

We've been warming today under a sunny sky, and the heat will only get more intense going forward. Today we warmed back to seasonal averages, and it will get much hotter through the weekend and beyond.
