Two suspected shoplifters were arrested Tuesday after allegedly trying to steal from from an area Home Depot store.

UPDATE 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2019 - The Chico Police Department has released new information about one of the listed suspects in the crime. 

Authorities said they were contacted by Hans Russell, previously mentioned by police as one of the suspects, who said that he was not arrested and was not involved in the crime. 

Officers confirmed his identity and cleared him of any involvement in the crime. They say that the suspect in the crime provided a false name. 

The Chico Police Department has since identified the suspect as Wesley Willmon, 42. He is currently wanted for several outstanding warrants and police do not know his wherabouts.

CHICO, Calif. - Two suspected shoplifters were arrested Tuesday after allegedly trying to steal from from an area Home Depot store.

Specific details about the alleged theft were not immediately released, but police responded to the store at 2580 Notre Dame Blvd. on a report of shoplifting at about 1:58 p.m.

The Chico Police Department said one of the suspects fled the scene on foot, and the other suspect fled in a vehicle before police arrived.

Officers began checking the area for both suspects. Police located one of the suspects, identified as 41-year-old Hans Russell, at a nearby business. The second suspect, identified as 36-year-old Catherine Russell, was found leaving the scene in a vehicle.

Both suspects were positively identified by employees from Home Depot, and were placed under arrest.

Chico Police are encouraging businesses to participate in the prosecution of any thefts. Chico Police set up the Retail Watch Program in the past year, which seeks to reduce overall thefts and hold offenders accountable.

The program is aimed at reducing the tens of thousands of dollars businesses lose every year to shoplifters.  

Police only provided the photo of suspect Catherine Russell.
