Chico Police: Third person arrested in connection to Motel 6 murder investigation

UPDATE: 4:32 p.m. Monday, March 6 - Chico Police have arrested a third person in connection to the Motel 6 murder that happened on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Detectives said they served a search warrant at a residence on Columbus Ave regarding the Motel 6 murder investigation. Detectives contacted 36-year-old Eric Allen and gained information that implicated Allen as being involved in the incident, according to police.

Based on information gathered, Allen was arrested and booked on a single count of murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and felon in possession of ammunition, police said.

Chico Police arrested two people on Friday, Feb. 13. Justin James Cozakas and Monica Stanton Ruggiero were charged with an open count of murder.

This case is still on-going and Chico Police Detectives encourage anyone with information pertaining to this investigation to call the Detective Bureau at 530-897-5820.

Chico Police did not release further details on the information gathered.


UPDATE: 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18 - Butte County District Attorney, Mike Ramsey said the two Motel 6 murder suspects will be arraigned in Superior Court at 3 p.m.

Justin James Cozakas and Monica Stanton Ruggiero have been charged with an open count of murder, according to Ramsey.


Editor note: A previous press release said two people were arrested for murder. Butte County District Attorney, Mike Ramsey clarified the two have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

UPDATE: 2:02 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 - Two people have been arrested for suspicion of murder, in connection to an incident that happened at a Motel 6 in Chico, on Jan. 23, Chico police said.

Justin James Cozakas, 33, and Monica Standton Ruggiero, 33, of Chico were arrested.

Both have been booked into the Butte County Jail. 

Chico police said the investigation is ongoing and they will not be releasing any more information at this time.


UPDATE: 3:39 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 p.m. - The Chico Police department has identified the Motel 6 gunshot victim as 41-year-old John David Noonan of Oroville.

Police say they found the victim in one of the motel rooms, lying on the floor with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the hospital where they were pronounced deceased, police said.

Action News Now has reached out to Chico Police to learn if they have made any arrests.

Police said, "The investigation is ongoing, but no arrests have been made at this time. To protect the integrity of the investigation, we will not be providing any additional information at this time."


Editor's Note: While on-scene, Chico Police were calling this an "assault with a deadly weapon" case but as of 8 p.m. on Jan. 23, they say they have opened a homicide investigation.

CHICO, Calif. - Police Chief Mike O'Brien confirmed that a shooting investigation is underway in Chico, one person has been confirmed dead as of 2:19 p.m., according to Chico police.

Action News Now was at the Motel 6 in Chico on Manzanita Ct. where crime tape was wrapped around the scene.

Police said one person is injured and has been taken to the hospital, unfortunately, he did succumb to his injuries. Police are calling this a homicide.

Action News Now learned that the police are actively looking for a person of interest. However, they said there is no threat to the public.
