CHICO, Calif. – A Chico man was arrested Wednesday morning after police said he grabbed a gun and pointed it at a victim who was attempting to serve him with a restraining order.
Police responded to the 500 block of E. 19th Street due to the report of a firearm brandishing Wednesday morning. The victim told police they attempted to serve 25-year-old Joseph Daniel Lawrence with court paperwork related to a temporary restraining order.
Upon being served, Police said Lawrence retrieved a firearm and pointed it at the victim. The victim ran to their vehicle and contacted Chico PD.
Officers responded to the address, set a perimeter around the house, and conducted surveillance in an attempt to see Lawrence exit the house. After 20 minutes, officers said Lawrence exited the house and was taken into custody. However, Chico Police received information that additional subjects were possibly still inside Lawrence's house.
Chico Police said they utilized a Hostage Negotiator and made announcements into the residence through a loudspeaker. A female subject unrelated to the assault exited the house and was detained. Officers then cleared the house and searched for evidence. During the investigation, officers said they located the suspected firearm used in the assault.
The firearm was reported stolen from an earlier vehicle burglary that occurred in Chico a few days prior, according to the police department. Lawrence was arrested for various violations.
