Chico, Calif. -- Don't be surprised if you forget to put on your seatbelt and are pulled over by law enforcement.

Monday kicks-off "Click it or Ticket," a nationwide campaign to remind drivers to wear their seatbelts.

With this campaign, the Chico Police Department is joining forces with departments across the nation and citing seat belt violations.

One of the safest decisions drivers can make is to put on their seatbelt.

In 2016, seat belt use in cars saved an estimated 14,668 lives, nation-wide.

Many Americans understand the lifesaving value of the seat belt - the national use rate is at 90.1%, but nearly 27.5 million people still don't buckle up.

"If there's other times where we're more inclined to give warnings or we see multiple violations, we can cut breaks on certain things, but when we do directed and specific enforcement for seatbelt violations especially during a national campaign, there's not going to be a lot of warnings, there's going to be a lot more citations," said Todd Lefkowitz, Traffic Sergeant with the Chico Police Department.

The campaign "Click it or Ticket," will be from May 21st to June 3rd.

The citations are not a moving violation, so they don't affect driving records, there is just a fine drivers will have to pay.
