CHICO, Calif. - There were no injuries reported after a fire broke out at an apartment complex off of Esplanade in Chico Sunday night, but a man took matters into his own hands and fought the fire himself.

The man's name is Albert Chavez, he's lived at the Avenida Apartments for three years, but last night he became a hero.

"I was just protecting my home, protecting my home, that's all I was doing," Albert Chavez said.

Chavez heard a loud boom and the voice of a woman screaming last night around 6:30.

The woman who lived nextdoor to the fire already had 9-1-1 on the phone, so he acted fast.

"There's a fire extinguisher there I broke the glass, got the fire extinguisher went over to the apartment pushed open the door I tried to put the first part out right here by the air conditioner I couldn't get it out cause of the smoke," Chavez said.

But chavez didn't stop there, he went around to his neighbors doors knocking on them warning everyone there was a fire and to evacuate.

Chavez said by that time the fire was a little bit lower, so he was able to go in again.

"I put the fire out here right by the air conditioner, I put that one out and came out," he said,

But Chavez still wasn't done yet.

"And then I saw another fire behind the door a little bit bigger so I went in again and I was able to put that one out," Chavez said.

By that time the fire department had arrived and Chavez said there were no other flames to fight.

He told the firefighters where the fire was and what he did, and now the apartment complex sees him as a hero.

"If he didn't act the way he did it could've been quite catastrophic and quite a different scenario," Scott Walker, program director at Avenida Apartments said.

Chavez told me when he saw the smoke he didn't really think, it was all just his instinct to protect his home and his neighbors.

"I just reacted to what was happening you know i knew somebody could get hurt I knew the whole place could go up, so I just I did what I had to do.

Managers at Avenida Apartments said there is still an investigation going on to figure out what caused the fire to break out.
