CHICO, Calif. - Chico MMA fighter Nick Maximov won his UFC debut.
Maximov beat Cody Brundage by an animous decision, winning all three rounds.
"[Brundage] was really well rounded," Maximov said. "It was a really good first fight in the UFC. It went how I wanted. I would've liked a finish. But getting 15 minutes under my belt isn't too bad either.
Maximov's success didn't come without some challenges. The biggest one was an opponent change three days before the fight.
"That whole fight week was probably the hardest, worst fight week that could've gone to plan for my first fight," he said. "The best thing is probably how bad it went. Getting an opponent switch and doing all the media for the first time is just a crazy experience."
Despite the craziness leading up to the fight, all the hard work paid off when Maximov's arm was raised.
"It was great," he said. "It was like a drug. You just want to go back in there and do it again and again."
Maximov didn't call anyone out, which fighters often do to say who they'd like to fight next. Instead, he's just looking to move up the ranks by beating whoever the UFC offers him.
"I gotta keep going up the ladder and earn my respect by fighting people not just talking," Maximov said. "If people talk to you, then yeah I'll do it. In the meantime, I just gotta work my way up and whoever they throw at me is who I gotta fight."
Maximov hopes to fight again in December.
