CHICO, Calif. - A local MMA fighter is kicking his career to the next level.
Nick Maximov started fighting after watching Bruce Lee movies as a kid. He’s come a long way.
The 23-year-old trains with iconic MMA fighters Nate and Nick Diaz. As their protege, he’s received a lot of attention. The Chico High School grad signed with the UFC two weeks ago.
Nick accepted a fight on short notice. It was scheduled for June 19th, but his opponent backed out. Instead, the UFC gave him a four fight contract.
"It's what I've been dreaming about,” Nick said. “[Nate] has prepared me for what's going to happen and how it's all gonna work. I feel like I'm getting in his shoes."
Nick mostly trains in Stockton, but also spends time in Chico at Stand Alone Gym. He hopes to be an inspiration for younger kids in the area.
“Obviously, Aaron Rodgers was a stepping stone for it all,” Nick said. “But now it’s time to try to take his place and go above it. That’s the whole goal. Then to have someone go above me.”
Nick is a perfect 6-0 as a professional fighter.
He doesn’t have a date for his UFC debut yet, but plans to fight later this year.
