Chico Calif.-- This is a problem that's not often talked about, but is prevalent in many parts of the North State… gangs.

One Chico man says every day, he is afraid for his life because he lives among gang members.

“Where do I go? What do I do?

That's the question Joseph and his wife have been asking themselves for quite some time. They've lived on Nord Avenue in Chico for about four and a half years, and said in the last couple of years things have really gotten out of control.

“That house is X4, that house is X4, that house is X4, the 3 trailers out back are X4.”

X4 is the sign for the Norteños, a prevalent gang in Northern California.

Joseph didn't want his face on camera because he says every day, he's afraid for his life.

We asked how he knew these houses belong to the Norteños, and he said a couple of months ago at night he heard someone screaming in their yard.

“We are X4, El Norte, and we are coming to take our house back.”

They think before their landlord bought this house, it belonged to the gang.

“Right there on that wall, there is an X4 and it was painted over.”

He says they only get a few hours of sleep every night because they're scared, and the daytime isn't that much better.

“I sit in this chair to watch television. I got a .357 magnum right here, I’ve got a .22 pistol right here, and another .357 right there.”

When they go outside, they have at least a flashlight Taser with them as well.

He knows he's in a bad situation, but says he'll do whatever it takes to protect himself and his wife, and if things escalate, he's not going down without a fight.

He says they can't move out because they don't have the money to do that, and he no longer works after having knee surgery and losing his job.

Chico police say there are several gangs in the area, and they do have a unit specifically designed to deal with that.

A trough of low pressure is moving over northern California this afternoon and tonight, and that will increase our wind speed and raise our area's fire danger even further. The wind will be weaker Thursday, but the smoke will get worse.
