CHICO, Calif. – A downtown Chico flower cart is doing more than providing flowers for Valentine’s Day.

The Bloomin’ Hope Flower Cart is located at Fourth and Main Street this Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The flower cart became a reality in April 2013. They said it was inspired by their Director of Services, Shelly Watson. The group said Watson has been involved in two of the women’s shelters at the Jesus Center: The Sabbath House and House of Hope.

This vocational program allows them to give back and be part of the community.

“Well, we are hoping that all the women feel a sense of purpose and connect with the other women down here. They get to share each other’s stories," Cart Manager, Ali Bolduc said. "Like I said different walks of life from why you’re at the shelter, why you’re in transitional living, and you get to connect and be with beautiful flowers. As for myself, I went through the Sabbath house and the housing programs years back."

The flower cart also gives the women a way to explore their creative talent, and feel a sense of belonging and purpose.

"I think it's fantastic to empower women through something so beautiful," a Chico resident said. "The homeless issue is so complicated, I think we need really dynamic and complicated solutions. This one seems like a great way to get the word out and work towards solving a problem."

A disturbance moved over northern California and the rest of the Pacific Northwest this afternoon. It brought more gusty wind like yesterday, and cooler air, but only isolated rain showers. It will be much quieter this weekend with a late summer warmup.
