CHICO, Calif. – Investigators are working to find out what happened after a train slammed into a car in south Chico on Thursday.

Chico police said a freight train slammed into a car off Hegan Lane Thursday night. That car was destroyed, caught fire, and damaged some cargo on the train, and started some spot fires.

Investigators said there is no indication that anyone was in the car when the train hit. There is no obvious railroad crossing in the area where the train struck the car, so it’s unclear at this time how it got on the tracks.
