REDDING, Calif. - A car was driven into a telephone pole near the intersection of Hartnell Avenue and School Street in Redding Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020, just after 12:15 p.m. The location was in front of Redding Fire Station 5, so help arrived at the scene quickly.
Shawn Ireland, a 38-year-old from Redding, was driving a Nissan Sentra northbound on School Street when he "reportedly" fell asleep, according to police. The Redding Police Department and the Redding Fire Department responded, saying there were only minor injuries involved in the crash, experienced by the driver and his passenger.
44-year-old Robert Dominguez was the passenger. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The driver and the passenger were both wearing seatbelts and their airbags successfully deployed, police said.
Officers said they do not believe that drugs and alcohol are factors in this collision.
Damage to the utility pole caused cable lines to fall across Hartnell Avenue, initiating a brief closure of the street.
The collision is under investigation and will be reviewed by the Redding Police Traffic Unit for possible charges.
