Campfire off Comanche Creek, one hospitalized

A fire burned a transient camp just off Comanche creek, in the area of Hegan Lane.

CHICO, Calif. - A fire burned a transient camp just off Comanche Creek, in the area of Hegan Lane around 1 a.m. on Monday.

Chico police received multiple reports of explosions and fire in the area of Comanche Creek near the 400 block of Otterson drive on Monday.

Through investigation it was determined that a large camp in the area was fully engulfed in flames, police said. Three subjects were contacted and they reported being present in the camp at the time of the fire. 

One of the subjects suffered severe burns to his feet and hands, he was transported to Enloe Medical Center by ambulance for his injuries.

Chico Police, Chico Fire, Cal Fire, and Butte County EMS responded to the area. The fire was quickly extinguished by fire crews.

Police interviewed other people in the camp and said this fire is not suspicious. Rather, a campfire that got out of control.

The weather will be pulling a 180 as we head into the evening hours and kick off our work week. A north wind will be taking hold, bringing gusty conditions and increased fire danger to the valley, foothills, and the Sierra Mountains. Gusts between 25-35mph are possible from late this evening through Monday night for the valley while the foothills and the Sierra will continue to see the windy conditions through Tuesday morning. This has prompted a Red Flag Warning for the Valley 11pm tonight through 8pm Monday while the Sierra and Foothills will last through Tuesday morning.
