CALIFORNIA - California lawmakers are calling for a stop to the deportation of an inmate who helped fight Shasta County's Zogg Fire.
On Nov. 19, immigration advocates highlighted the case of Bounchan Keola, a 39-year-old inmate. His family immigrated from Laos when he was only two-years-old.
Advocates say federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement picked him up after he worked the firelines and transferred him to an immigration detention facility days before he was set to be released in October. A federal judge ordered him to be deported.
California has a state law barring local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration authorities on some crimes, but it does not apply to the state prison system.
