BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - Water customers in Chico and Oroville could soon be paying more.

California Water Service is asking the Public Utilities Commission to approve a rate hike. Chico cal water wants a 3.2 percent increase.

For Oroville, it would be a 5.7 percent increase.

Both rates would go into effect in 2020, and there would be smaller increases in the two following years.

Cal Water says the extra revenue is needed to improve infrastructure, including replacing water main piping.

"Not only do those pipe replacements provide savings by not having to respond to leaks, they improve the water quality we deliver to our customers," said George Barber, district manager for Cal Water. "They also provide fire water, fire flow, so our first responders have that water necessary when they need it."

The CPUC will hold public hearings on the request. The meeting in Chico will be Feb. 12 in and in Oroville on Feb. 14.

See a breakdown of the proposed changes below.
