WHISKEYTOWN, Calif. – California Highway Patrol responded to a mental health call that led to Highway 299 briefly closed on Tuesday morning.
A 55-year-old man from Washington ran out of gas and was stranded. As soon CHP arrived the man doused his vehicle inside and out with lighter fluid, he threatened to light on an officer on fire and then locked himself inside his car, according to CHP.
He then doused himself in lighter fluid and unsuccessfully tried to light himself on fire.
Social Services in Redding were contacted and were also unable to convince the man to open his vehicle.
Soon after, the Washington man opened his vehicle door and was helped out with no further incident.
The incident took place on the westbound side of Highway 299 and was located just past Oak Bottom Marina RV and Campground entrance.
