CHICO, Calif. – A week since a collision at a busy intersection just south of Chico left two people dead and temporary safety measures are now in place.
Motorists who drive through that stretch now will notice additional warnings. Caltrans put up changeable message signs. It alerts drivers that there is an intersection ahead and drivers will now feel something different.
On Saturday, crews installed rumble strips to alert drivers to slow down. Action News Now asked Caltrans officials - could permanent changes to this roadway prevent any future crashes?
"There is always limitations to improvements we can do on a road, based on traffic conditions that are out there on the roadway," CalTrans District 3, Deputy District Director Tom Brannon said. "We will always monitor the situation and find the best project we can do to improve safety for the motorists that are out there."
Brannon said within the next month, the rumble strips will be embedded into the asphalt for an even more pronounced "warning" for drivers. CalTrans officials said come 2021, more improvements are planned, including upgraded messaging.
