CHICO, Calif. - Chico Unified School District will allow student-athletes to compete in multiple sports on school teams.
After clarifying with the California Department of Public Health, CIF stated in a media release that high school athletes can compete on club teams at the same time.
John Shepherd with Chico Unified said this will help students in the long run.
“As a parent and as an educator and as a member of the CIF executive committee, we are all excited,” John said. “I’m definitely excited for the student-athletes. Any chance they have to participate in as many opportunities as possible is the best scenario.”
As a Pleasant Valley senior and future UCSB volleyball student-athlete, Julia Shepherd, said this will help her excel at the next level.
“I think it will be easier for me because I will be able to get more reps in and get stronger and get better, just like all the other athletes out there trying to do the same thing," said Shepherd. "I think it will just be really good and help me mentally prepare for what’s next at the next level."
The only exception is football. Students will not be able to play on a high school football team and club football team at the same time.
