CHICO, Calif. - The gamma variant was detected in Butte County Wednesday, according to Danette York, Director of Butte County Public Health.

This gamma variant, also known as the P.1 variant and spreads more easily than other variants, York said.

York said people who have tested positive for this variant have shown more of the virus in their body and can spread the virus easily.

“Studies do show that the current vaccines available in the United States remain effective against the gamma variant although vaccine effectiveness may not be as high as with the original virus,” York said.

According to the World Health Organization, the gamma variant was first recorded in Brazil in Nov. 2020.

The first of two storms moved over northern California late last night and this morning, but our weather has quieted for now. More rain showers will fall Saturday, but heavier rain and snow with stronger wind arrives Sunday.
