BIGGS, Calif. - A crash involving a big rig killed one cow on Highway 99 near Gridley, Wednesday morning.

The crash temporarily blocked both lanes of the highway for less than 5 minutes.

California Highway Patrol Officer Z. Farris tells Action News Now it happened just before 4 a.m. near Drake Avenue.

Farris says three cows were on the roadway, the crash killed one of them.

The two surviving cows ran away shortly after that.

It took officers nearly an hour and a half to locate them, gather them and put them into a safe spot.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office also assisted by going door to door and asking homeowners whose cows these belonged to.

The big rig driver, a man, was not hurt.

Action News Now is working to find out the circumstances leading up to the wreck.

We've had a mostly sunny valley with a few more clouds over the mountains today, but it's been another beautiful day with warmer highs than yesterday. Much warmer weather is headed our way this weekend... enjoy, but stay cool!
